The African Origins and Construction of Blackness in Brazil (1750-1822)
Resumo
While in residence at the Newberry Library, Rodrigues will examine the social construction of African difference in Brazil during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries emphasizing the historical formation of blackness in its complex relation with the multiplicity of African origins. To understand these dynamics, he will focus on the underlying logic of the textual and iconographic description of African peoples in travel accounts produced in the Lusophone Atlantic and in writings by merchants, slave-owners, and administrators who traveled to Brazil.
