CHINA & BRAZIL PREPARING FOR THE 2021 ENVIRONMENTAL COPS
The Conferences of the Parties (COPs) are the most important moment in globalenvironmental governance where political and public attention are turned to the issues ofclimate change and biodiversity loss. From the 15th COP Climate negotiations inCopenhagen to COP21 in Paris a lot has changed. Both the climate and the biodiversityagendas have made significant advances, but, as recent joint reports by theIntergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) have shown, it becomesever more urgent for both topics to be discussed together in order to achieve crucialsynergies to meet both agendas.
Since Brazil’s hosting of the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio, Brazil has been an important actorand partner for China in the sustainability agenda. The 2006 COP8 in Curitiba, Brazil was animportant milestone for putting cities on the biodiversity agenda. The Paris Agreement in2015 managed to unite big emitters to commit to necessary emissions reductions, and hashad Brazil and China sign on to it as important emerging countries.
This year’s COP15 in Kunming, China is “the Paris moment for nature” where China’s recentefforts in the concretizing ideas of an Ecological Civilization can be turned into effectiveleadership. Under the slogan “Ecological Civilization: Building a Shared Future for All Life onEarth” the expected post-2020 biodiversity agenda will set new standards for “Living inharmony with nature.
This webinar brings together experts from China and Brazil to discuss the current state, challenges and perspectives in both issues of global governance of climate change andbiodiversity.
Dr. Zou Lele (Chinese Academy of Sciences, CAS) and Prof. Leila da Costa Ferreira(NEPAM/UNICAMP) will be debating about the expected strategies and positions that Chinaand Brazil will be presenting for their climate policies at next month's COP26 in Glasgow.
Prof. Carlos Joly (IB/UNICAMP) and Prof. Zhang Yan (University of CAS) will be debatingabout legal and science-policy issues in both countries concerning biodiversity in this “superyear for nature”.
