Sexualidade e gênero têm-se demonstrado nodais em disputas acerca da experiência democrática, operando como gramáticas articuladoras de regimes morais, políticos e jurídicos e expressão de conflitos sociais marcados por raça, classe, geração e territorialidade. Constituem ainda um campo interdisciplinar de estudos, presente em todas as áreas do conhecimento, com maior densidade nas Ciências Sociais, caracterizado por relações íntimas e conflituosas com ativismos e pela articulação entre estudos de gênero e sexualidade.
